This organic certified, fresh mate from Brazil has a mild slightly bitter taste which makes it ideal for yerba mate novices and regular drinkers. It’s easy to prepare with a refreshing taste and strong caffeine content. Its leafy cut leads to easy preparation with a gourd and mate straw.
Harvested by hand from old-growth forests in the Brazilian region of Pinháo, these loose cut leaves and stems are prepared in the traditional way: tied in bundles using forest vines and dried in a rotary drum to preserve their high antioxidant content, delicious fresh aroma, and vibrant green color.
Inspired by Meta Mate’s deep love for the forest and its magnificent biodiversity, they have collaborated with indigenous families to create a sustainable alternative to industrial mate production.
Monoculture farming maintains rows of 2m tall single species trees, pruned with chainsaws, grown quickly under the sun and harvested mechanically three times per year. The leaves used to create this delicious 23 blend are hand-cut by passionate farmers from over 30 native varieties of mate tree that grow over 30m tall, protected from direct light by the old-growth forest canopy. This slow maturing process, unique microclimate, and fertile, virgin soil contribute to this mate’s deliciously grassy and slightly smoky flavor.
The first full analysis by the west in the 1960s by the Pasteur Institute concluded that: “it is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to mate in nutritional value. It has almost all the vitamins necessary to sustain life.” Meta Mate is as passionate about preserving this virgin forest goodness as they are about tending the trees – this 23 blend is the only vacuum-packed loose leaf mate in the world.
